Let's Play Jelly Boy!

So I did my first let's play video for Jelly Boy. Need to configure the sound settings a little better and probably get a head set as there were some sound issues. And maybe stop the oh goshing!

I wanna be the very best...

If 'like no one ever was' was your direct thought process from the title then congratulations, at some point in your 90's life you thought Pokemon was a good idea. If not you are probably damning the fact you ever read this blog.

So, playing Pokemon Blue was a defining moment in my gaming childhood. I beg you to remember Pokemon started out as a Nintendo game and nothing more (that's not to say I don't like the 'more' as I'll demonstrate). It was probably the first RPG (yes, RPG!) that I played through to completion and I never put that Gameboy Colour down!  At the tender age of 9 and already a game enthusiast I suddenly found myself in my first real game addiction. I'm talking about 'sitting with the bedroom door ajar and  the lamp in arms reach ready for the noise of a parent on the stairs' kind of addicted.

I defeated the elite four and...my life is over. What am I to do? Well my Mum buys me Pokemon Yellow for my birthday that's what happens! Since then it's been excitement release after release, I never thought that 14 years down the line I'd be watching the Nintendo announcement for the new 3D release and have a stack of games under my belt.

Onwards from the handhelds, in the last few years I have come into possession of a beautiful little N64 piece. I originally bought an unboxed version for £20 at a carboot sale. I owned a lot of unboxed ones before I finally got my boxed Pikachu N64 (it's cheeks light up for f**k sake's, of course it's amazing)!

Apart from the games I own a few bits of merchandise, namely toys. I don't own any Pokemon cards but like most children in the 90's I had an extensive collection. I was never very great at understanding them so when my first ever pack contained a Charizard I traded it for a Onyx and Magneton and I was pleased (all round fail)! I think my favourite bit of merch is my Pokemon monopoly board because it genuinely gets used a lot!

Now, the height of my poke-dedication. Here is a little something I got permanently marked on my arm last year.  It's actually the beginning of what I plan to be a Nintendo sleeve. It was a thinly veiled check into my usual tattooist's character work skills, and I'm super happy with my little Pika!

I'm an incredibly nostalgic person which probably fuels my love for retro gaming and Pokemon is something that never left me. There are 2 franchises that, to this day, I can't rid from my life even though they've gone down the pan in recent years. The other is Resident Evil, I plan to cover Resident Evil in a future video  because that collection is extensive and FAR cooler!

I'm not drunk.

.

Let's talk about boobs.

So yesterday I was over on the facebook page Game Trader (if you're looking to buy and sell retro goodies and have a chat, this is my favourite place, bunch of awesome people) and got into a bit of a debate about the perception of gamer girls.

There was once a time (and very recently) when gamer girls were perceived to be obese, ugly nerds. Somewhere a long the line that changed drastically thanks to images of scantily dressed, pretty girls covering up their genitals with their Super Nintendo or making out with a 360 controller, thus the reinvention of the gamer girl.  I'm sure you've all seen the images but you can check a reference here.

But has this now created a problem of it's own? I sometimes find it genuinely difficult to post in forums or sell on line without getting hit on, I feel as though the 'gamer girl' has been sexualised so much that on occasion it's been difficult to be taken seriously. I don't need nor want to jump in pictures of my collection with my boobs hanging out, I just want to talk to like minded people and snap up some new gear.

It seems I am not alone. More and more meme's like these are showing up all around the Internet.
My question is why do looks and gender even play a part? Most of the gamer girls I know are smart, attractive women with jobs and children and husbands and they've certainly never posed half naked. As far as my opinion goes, if you're a genuine gamer your games should be all that matter, your pretty face, boobs and vagina...well they should just stay out of it.

Quick post

Just a short post today, I'm pretty busy with a poorly girl at home. I thought I'd show off my main shelf which I keep nice and organized, mostly because they're valuables and favourites I don't want to get wrecked! You can probably notice the top shelf is full of Resident Evil merchandise and there's a few nice Pokemon items hanging around. I'll blog some individual posts about these collections in the future, there's a few special items in there and more hidden around the house. In case you're wondering what the purple boxes are they're housing all my controllers, it's already a jungle of wires on my TV unit so it's much more practical!

I'm planning on doing my first review in the upcoming week, I picked up Pop'n TwinBee for the SNES a while back and haven't got round to playing it yet. I quite fancied firing up the SNES so I'll be playing and reviewing it this week.

The purpose

Hello! I'll try and keep my intro short and sweet, but no doubt I will go off on a multitude of tangents. My name is Cat (in case you didn't get that) I'm 22 and live in Cornwall with my 2 year old daughter.

Now, now, the point of this blog is, as a general classification, retro gaming (and maybe the occasional ode to 80/90's cartoons). Yes, I'm kind of a collector, but I tend to differ to the hardcore ones because I mostly only bother with games I truly love and they all get used over and over. I don't dust them, I don't put them in protective cases and I leave the discs out upside down for days. If you're a hardcore collector you may be feeling a sense of panic right now, this is a pre-warning because maybe, just maybe I'll be showing off my daughters wonderful destructive skills, her favourite thing to do at the moment is put PS1 discs into the xbox and disc burn them all (I did warn you of this tangent stuff).

What can you expect from my blog...mostly jargon babbling as already demonstrated...but my intention is to review retro games as I purchase (SNES to Gameboy to Dreamcast,  there are no specifics here) and generally showcase the delights of retro gaming, maybe a little showing off from my personal stuff too, I won't be able to help myself.

Oh and this is me! Face to the name and all that.
